Our 2.5 hour training course on wound identification for the first responder is geared towards police and law enforcement initial investigations. We cover the following topics during this humor rich patrol level course:

  • Contusions: A discussion of the characteristics and causes of contusions, including the mechanism of injury, the appearance of the skin, and the potential for underlying internal injuries. This course also covers the importance of gathering and preserving evidence related to contusions, such as clothing or other items that may have caused the injury.
  • Abrasions: An overview of the different types of abrasions, including superficial and deep abrasions, and the causes and mechanisms of injury that can lead to abrasions. Participants will learn the importance of collecting and preserving evidence related to abrasions, such as scrapings from the wound or other items that may have caused the injury
  • Blunt force trauma: The different types of blunt force trauma, including contusions, abrasions, and fractures, and the causes and mechanisms of injury that can lead to blunt force trauma as well as what the injuries may and may not look like.
  • Lacerations: The different types of lacerations, including partial thickness and full thickness lacerations, and the causes and mechanisms of injury that can lead to the lacerating of the victim. We will cover different improvised and weaponized objects and actual weapons used to cause the injury and also discuss other items that may have come into contact with the victim to cause the wound.
  • Incisions: A discussion of the characteristics and causes of incisions, including the mechanism of injury, the appearance of the wound, and the potential for underlying internal injuries.
  • Stab and chop wounds: An overview of the different types of stab and chop wounds, including the causes and mechanisms of injury, the appearance of the wound, and the potential for underlying internal injuries.
  • Gun shot wounds: A topical discussion of the different types of gun shot wounds, including entrance and exit wounds, contact shots and caliber, the trajectory of the bullet, and the presence of any associated projectiles or shell casings.
