The vehicle infotainment system is one of the most underutilized evidence sources in criminal investigations. It’s in almost every modern car, it retains data long after the incident, and most investigators never touch it. Defense attorneys are starting to notice that gap.

Here’s what’s in those systems, what it can do for your investigation, and what you need to know before you lose it.

What Infotainment Systems Actually Store

Modern vehicle infotainment systems—think the touchscreen console in any vehicle built in the last decade—are essentially computers that log data continuously. When a phone is paired via Bluetooth or USB, the system syncs and stores far more than most people realize:

• Call logs: Incoming, outgoing, and missed calls with timestamps—even after the phone is wiped or replaced.
• Text message history: SMS and in some cases app messages synced through the phone connection.
• Contact lists: Synced contacts from the paired phone.
• GPS and navigation history: Recent destinations, routes taken, and location history with timestamps.
• Device identifiers: The Bluetooth or USB identifiers of every phone that’s ever been paired to the system.
• Media playback history: In some systems, track and playlist data that can establish timeline context.

The investigative value is obvious. A suspect who claims they weren’t somewhere has a problem if their car’s nav system routed them there. A suspect who claims they weren’t communicating with someone has a problem if their infotainment call log says otherwise.

Why This Evidence Gets Missed

Most investigators know to get the phone. Fewer think to get the car. And the infotainment system retains data independently of the phone—meaning a suspect who wipes their device, gets a new phone, or destroys evidence may not realize the car kept a copy.

This matters especially in domestic violence homicides, staged accidents, and cases where the suspect’s alibi depends on their claimed location. The vehicle doesn’t lie and doesn’t get intimidated.

Extraction Requires Specialized Tools

Infotainment forensics is a digital forensics specialty. You’re not pulling this data with standard tools. Extraction requires purpose-built hardware and software—Berla’s iVe platform is the most widely used in law enforcement—and a qualified examiner who understands vehicle-specific data formats.

Your job as the investigator is to recognize the evidence exists and preserve it. That means:

• Getting the vehicle into controlled custody before it’s returned, repaired, or sold
• Documenting the make, model, year, and VIN
• Noting what phones were paired and recovering those devices as well
• Submitting a warrant for the infotainment data the same way you would for phone records

Warrant Considerations

Courts have generally treated vehicle data similarly to other digital evidence—a warrant is the safe play and increasingly the legal requirement. Don’t assume that owning the vehicle means the owner consents to forensic extraction of its data. Get the warrant, document your probable cause, and preserve the chain of custody from extraction through analysis.
