Course Details

Missing children and child abduction cases demand a coordinated, rapid, and methodical response. This course gives officers the investigative framework to move fast without missing critical steps. 1 hour. Idaho POST-certified. $40.

Course Modules

Module 1: Initial Response and Prioritization. What to do in the first 10 minutes. Rapid assessment, scene security, and information gathering from reporting parties. AMBER Alert criteria and the legal threshold for activation.

Module 2: Classifying the Case. Runaway, lost child, family abduction, or stranger abduction — the investigative response differs significantly depending on the classification. This module covers indicators for each and common misclassification errors that delay cases.

Module 3: Child Death Scene Response. When a missing child case becomes a homicide investigation. Scene recognition, evidence preservation, and the documentation protocols that hold up in court. Covers differences in child death pathology relevant to patrol-level scene assessment.

Module 4: Agency Coordination and Resources. How to work with NCMEC, FBI, state clearinghouses, and other responding agencies without losing control of the local investigation. Covers records requests, tips management, and media coordination basics.

Accreditation

This course is certified by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council. 1 credit hour.

Both. Patrol officers are the first on scene and their actions in the first hour shape the entire investigation. Detectives who inherit these cases will also find the classification and coordination modules directly applicable.

Yes. Criteria, the activation process, and law enforcement responsibilities are covered in Module 1.
