Course Overview

Sex Crimes Investigation Training for Law Enforcement is a 32-hour online course built for patrol officers, detectives, and investigators at every experience level. The curriculum covers the full investigative arc from initial response through trial preparation, grounded in the neurobiology of trauma and current best practices in victim-centered investigation.

This course was designed around the reality that sex crimes are among the most complex cases an investigator handles. Victim behavior that looks inconsistent makes sense when you understand what trauma does to the brain. Suspects who appear cooperative can be among the most dangerous. Evidence that seems absent is often present and perishable. Getting these cases right requires more than instinct.

What You Will Cover

Sex Crimes Introduction and Initial Response

Definitions, arousal and power dynamics, rape and other sex crimes, stereotypes that distort investigations, and the critical decisions made at first response.

Victims, Trauma, and Interviews

The neurobiology of trauma, tonic immobility, and what they mean for how victims present and communicate. Delayed reporting, victim interview setup, trauma-symptom recognition, and open-ended questioning techniques that produce usable detail without re-traumatizing.

Suspects and Suspect Interviews

Consent law and how to investigate lack of consent. Suspect psychology and typology, rapport-based interviewing, the PEACE model, voluntariness doctrine, and how the suspect-victim relationship changes your approach. Includes case study analysis of complex, high-profile investigations.

Evidence Packaging and Collection

Sexual assault kits, physical evidence collection and preservation, suspect evidence, and scenario-based practice.

Other Considerations

Consent, search warrants, intimate partner violence, LGBTQ+ sexual assault, and sex trafficking.

Preparing for Trial

Cold cases, late reports, and post-arrest case development for prosecution.

Misconduct and False Reports

False allegations, law enforcement misconduct, and how to investigate both with the same rigor you bring to any other case.

Upon completion, students receive a certificate of completion and a sex crimes investigation packet for field reference.

Who This Course Is For

Sex Crimes Investigation Training is appropriate for patrol officers handling initial response and first reports, investigators assigned to sex crimes cases, and detectives coming to these cases from other units. The course does not assume prior specialization. It builds foundational understanding and then moves into advanced investigative technique.

Trauma-Informed Investigation

Victim behavior in sexual assault cases is frequently misread. A victim who does not fight back, who delays reporting, who struggles to provide consistent detail, or who maintains a relationship with their assailant is not an unreliable witness. These responses have a documented neurobiological basis. This course covers the science of tonic immobility, trauma-impaired memory, and the physiological stress response so investigators understand what they are seeing and can interview accordingly.

Understanding this science also prepares you for court. Prosecutors need investigators who can articulate why victim behavior was consistent with trauma rather than inconsistent with assault. That foundation is built here.

Suspect Interviews

Suspect interviews in sex crimes cases carry distinct challenges. Many offenders are known to the victim, present as cooperative, and have rehearsed explanations. This course covers how to approach suspects who are strangers and those who are known to the victim, how to use rapport, how to navigate voluntariness and the PEACE model, and how to read suspect psychology and typology. Includes analysis of real case interviews, including complex, high-profile examples that illustrate the gaps between appearance and reality.

Evidence

Sexual assault cases turn on evidence collection decisions made in the first hours. This course covers sexual assault kits, physical and biological evidence, suspect evidence collection, chain of custody, and scenario-based practice to reinforce proper procedure.

False Reports and Misconduct

Most sex crimes training avoids the subject of false allegations. This course does not. A dedicated module addresses how to investigate false reports with the same systematic approach applied to substantiated cases, and how to identify and handle situations involving law enforcement misconduct. Investigators who cannot navigate these scenarios with rigor compromise both victims and defendants.

Course Format

32 hours of online instruction including video content, case studies, interactive scenarios, and graded assessments. Self-paced. Certificate of completion issued upon passing the final assessment.

I would recommend the course to others because of how much content was provided. I self fund most of my course and this one by far gave me the most material for the cost.

What RTI Does Differently

Most law enforcement training exists because someone needed to fill a POST requirement. You've sat through that training. You know exactly what it looks like.

RTI courses are built by working investigators who got tired of watching officers fail in the field because their training never matched reality. Every module is grounded in current forensic science, tested against real case outcomes, and built to hold up in court, not just in a classroom.

No rubber-stamp certificates. No recycled slide decks from a decade ago. No instructors whose only qualification is that they once attended the course they're now teaching.

If you do the work, you'll leave with skills you can use on your next shift.
That's the standard RTI trains to.
