In this 4-hour course we will be teaching patrol officers about the investigation of an adult death scene, including:

  • Scene preservation and documentation: Emphasize the importance of preserving the scene and documenting all physical evidence, including photographs, the use of drones and 360-degree LiDAR for scene capture and measurements, and death scene sketches.
  • Interacting with witnesses and family members: How to properly interview witnesses, family members, and other persons of interest, as well as how to handle sensitive and emotional situations.
  • Collection and preservation of physical evidence: Discuss the importance of collecting and preserving physical evidence, such as fingerprints, DNA samples, and clothing, and how to properly secure, label, and store this evidence for future prosecution if that is necessary.
  • Identification of cause and manner of death: Explain the methods used to determine the cause and manner of death, such as medical examinations, toxicology tests, and firearm examinations, and how these findings can help determine the course of the investigation.
  • Understanding the dynamics of death scenes: Provide officers with an understanding of the different types of death scenes, such as homicides, suicides, accidents, and natural deaths, and how to identify and respond to each type of scene.
